Automobiles and Deer
Steer clear of deer this year; some tips
Cars and deer have never been a good comboination. In recent years deer have presented an increasing danger to au8tomobile drivers, partially due to habitat encroachment, or our habitat sprawling into theirs.
Every year deer/car collisions are responsible for thousand of injuries. Thus causing hundreds of deaths. In addition, the average cost for this type of accident, factoring in vehicle damage and bodily injury is over $10,000.
State Farm insurance company did a study and found that these states have the highest number of car-deer collisions: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Texas
The good news is that despite where you live, vigilant driving works.
After an in depth public awareness campaign, the city of Erie Pennsylvania saw a six percent reduction in auto/deer-related claims. What they learned? Consistent hazard reminders keep collisions down.
Here is what you and your family can do to lessen the risk of hitting a deer:
- When it's dark, be attentive
- Use high beams when appropriate
- Avoid distractions like food, radio, and phones
- Additionally, deer are not only in the burbs and the sticks. They are common in urban areas also.
- Brake firmly but don't jerk the wheel if you see a deer
- Don't touch the animal (“A wounded and frightened deer can further injure itself or even hurt you.”)
- Park your car off the road, if that is possible
- Call your auto insurance agent or your insurance company representative. Report any damage to your vehicle
- Collision with a deer is covered under the comprehensive part of your policy
And here is a fact to share with your family and friends: Deer kill more people in one year than bears and mountain lions have killed in the past one hundred years.
