Shopping for Home Insurance

When shopping for home insurance, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Dwelling Coverage:  Your dwelling coverage amount should be equal to the market value of your house minus the value of the land.  Many people make the mistake of buying dwelling coverage in the amount of the market value of their home. You just don't need dwelling coverage for your land.

  • Personal Property Coverage:  Typically your personal property coverage amount will be 70% of your dwelling coverage amount.  So, if your dwelling is covered for $200,000, you are likely to have $140,000 in personal property coverage (by default). This can be increased or decreased if needed.  This coverage will protect your furniture, belongings, etc. in the event of a loss.

  • Personal Liability Coverage:  Liability coverage will protect you in the event that you are liable for injury to another person.  Talk to an agent or other insurance professional to determine how much liability coverage you should have.

  • Medical Payments:  In the event of a minor injury to another party, medical payment coverage may pay for the damages (up to a limit) without determining whose fault the injury was.

  • Riders:  Some items such as guns, furs, jewelry, cameras, and cash may have limited protection under your policy.  You may "schedule" or add extra coverage for these items for an additional premium.

While shopping for homeowners insurance, be sure to pay close attention to the above coverage categories and make sure you review your coverage limits on an annual basis.
