Reliability
- Its important to make sure you are applying to a reliable company.
- Check each company's financial rating.
- Do a search for the company on the Internet. See what kind of information comes up. If you find "Rip-off alerts" or stories about people having problems, look at other companies.
- Find out what the lifetime maximum benefit on the plan is. If it's not $2,000,000 or more, you can find a better plan.
- Be sure you know what percentage of expenses your plan will cover after you reach your deductible. There are a lot of plans that cover 100% once your deductible is reached. For some people, that's a valuable benefit when choosing a deductible that's higher than they are used to.
Rating Structure
Companies rate differently. Some rate based on whether you are a single person applying, a two party/couple, or a family. If you have three people in your family and you apply for a company that using this rating structure, you may end up paying the same premium as a family of eight, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
Some companies base their rates on how many people are actually on the plan. This means that if you have eight people in your family you'll pay for eight people. If you have three, you'll pay for three.
